What is Fenugreek?

Fenugreek is an annual plant and medicinal herb that is used as a seasoning spice and is also available in seed, tea, and supplement form. Fenugreek has been used for centuries and is a significant component of Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine.

What are the health benefits of Fenugreek?

With a track record spanning several centuries of delivering health benefits, it is no wonder that Fenugreek remains widespread and is commonly used. Here are a few of its benefits:

  • Controlling inflammation. Inflammation can be our best friend or our worst enemy. When we suffer damage from bacteria or injury, an influx of white blood cells swings into action to repel the invader. The inflamed area is characterized by swelling, redness, and heat (think fever). This is when inflammation is our best friend. But it transforms into our worst enemy when chronic inflammation takes hold due to immune disorders, exposure to toxins, or untreated inflammation due to an injury or infection. The high level of antioxidants in fenugreek gives it the potential to help control inflammation. A 2012 study on mice published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology indicated that fenugreek could lower inflammation. However, more studies are needed.
  • Boosting testosterone. A 2010 study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that supplementing with 500 mg of fenugreek daily in physically fit men elevated strength and melted fat. An article on ClinicalTrials.gov stated that the herb boosted both total serum testosterone and free testosterone. Another study from 2017 published in the International Journal of Medical Sciences reported surges in energy, libido, mood, and sperm count linked to a testosterone increase.
  • Skyrockets men’s libido. This is thought to be a result of a testosterone increase.
  • Elevates physical and athletic performance. Again, a lift in testosterone levels results in better all-around athletic performance.
  • Lower blood sugar levels. Diabetes is a monster that destroys the quality of life of those who suffer from the affliction and eventually results in an early grave. Research has found that fenugreek might be able to slow the absorption of carbohydrates, especially sugar, which helps keep blood glucose levels in check. A study published in the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders found that fenugreek might slow the march of prediabetes to diabetes. Another study that appeared in the Journal of Medicinal Food reached similar conclusions and found that daily intake of one gram of fenugreek for a 1.5-month period, then raised to two grams for another 1.5 months, reduced blood sugar levels in diabetics.
  • Helps women produce milk for breastfeeding. With the recent shortage of baby formula due to the disruption of the 2021-2022 worldwide supply chain, producing an adequate breast milk supply has never been more crucial for mothers. A 2020 study published in the Clinical Epidemiology and Global Health Journal concluded that fenugreek could ramp up breast milk production in new mothers. As an added bonus, the study also found that fenugreek was linked to boosting the baby’s weight in the first week after birth. Why these results occurred remains a mystery, and further studies are needed.
  • Improves digestive health and causes weight loss. With all of the above-mentioned benefits, it is easy to connect the dots to fenugreek.

Are there side effects from Fenugreek use?

Yes. Although fenugreek has been proven safe for the overwhelming majority of users, the potential for adverse side effects is present with this herbal plant. Here are some of these possible developments:

  • Digestive disorders.
  • Maple syrup” odor in the urine.
  • Skin irritation if fenugreek is consumed excessively.
  • A steep drop in blood sugar could be dangerous.
  • As with all drugs and supplements, pregnant women need to exercise caution when trying any new substance, including fenugreek.
  • Delayed periods, and period pain and cramps.

Remember that these side effects are rare, primarily when fenugreek is used short-term. The key is to start small, listen to your body, and see and feel how it reacts.

As with any new supplement, discuss this with your physician before trying fenugreek.
