Implications of Filtering Hormones for Human and Environmental Health

Researchers have shown a particular interest in enhancing our capacity to remove steroids and sex hormones such as Testosterone and Estrogen from the environment, as these hormones can not only disrupt human functioning but also pose a threat to wildlife health and viability. By developing innovative filtration methods, this research aims to help countries meet the existing and future European Standards for safe drinking water.

Technological Advances in Water Filtration

For our drinking water to comply with EU goals, extensive research and development are necessary since current technologies don't effectively filter and remove micropollutants. Thus, scientists from KIT's Institute for Advanced Membrane Technology and the Institute of Microstructure Technology are collaborating to contrive methods that enhance the quality of commercial scale water purification.

Revolutionary Filtration Method: Combination of Chemistry and Light

Their promising process involves covering a pored filtration system with a light-sensitive chemical named Pd(II) porphyrin. On exposure to light, this molecule releases dioxin, also referred to as singlet oxygen, which due to its potent oxidative properties can effectively eliminate organic molecules from water irrespective of their concentration. By passing drinking water through this chemically coated filtration system, it's viable to substantially reduce the levels of Testosterone, Estrogen, and other hormones.

New Filtration Technique: Successful at Limiting Estradiol in Drinking Water

The researchers' filtration process was nearly able to meet the EU's drinking water safety guideline for keeping Estradiol levels below 1ng/L, by reducing its concentration from 100ng/L to 2ng/L. Additionally, this coating could purify up to 600 liters of water per hour for each square meter of chemically treated material. The researchers are confident about further optimizing this process to enhance scalability and efficacy in compliance with EU's goals.
