In this modern world of misinformation and click-baiting, it's challenging to get straight information when researching anything, especially men's health.
If you've been paying attention to the news lately, you've undoubtedly heard the discussion about Testicle Tanning circulating across social media. It has been a burning topic of discussion on several late-night talk shows and was even featured on a segment of Tucker Carlson's program.
It's part of a holistic trend known as Bromeopathy, a homegrown masculine version of Homeopathy that's becoming more widely adopted in our burgeoning disinformation economy. Think of it as a collection of Old Wives' Tales for men that end with guys showing their balls to the sun.
Testicle Tanning sounds like a joke—and it is. There's nothing beneficial about sunning your genitals, and it can even be harmful. The sad problem with lampooning Testicular Tanning is that even entertaining the thought guarantees certain men will inevitably believe it works.
The whole reason that people are even talking about this improbable wellness option is that there are a small set of influence peddlers out there that support the notion that exposing the testicles to infrared therapy is a valid means to boost Testosterone Levels.
Testicles Aren't Exactly Designed for Heat and Sunlight
Now think about this logically for a second. The testicles exist in the first place to separate sperm and the testes from heat. Ideal sperm production occurs at a temperature of approximately 93.2 degrees.
Temperatures closer to 98.6 degrees reduce the viability and motility of sperm. While Testicular tanning doesn't strongly negatively impact Testosterone Production, it's clear that the testicles aren't meant to be exposed to high levels of infrared light or heat.
Testicle Tanning vs. Infrared Therapy
While most people have heard of this “trend” referred to as Testicle Tanning, this term is very misleading. Advocates for Infrared Therapy refer to a specific medical treatment where the testes are exposed to infrared light. While your testicles would receive plenty of infrared light if you put them in direct sunlight, Infrared Therapy is performed in a clinical setting.
Infrared Therapy doesn't cause tanning because it doesn't involve Ultraviolet Light. Infrared Therapy only exposes the skin to low-frequency infrared light rather than UV light, which activates the tanning process.
Doctor An-Wen Chan of the University of Toronto strongly recommends against Testicular Tanning. Prolonged sun exposure is damaging to the skin, and exposure to the sun is the predominant catalyst of skin cancer. She explains that there is nothing in the scientific literature that provides evidence that Testicular Tanning benefits men.
Where Does the Idea That Infrared Light Boosts Testosterone Come From?
Like many medical myths, the false idea that Infrared Light stimulates Testosterone production comes from a misinterpretation of past scientific data and experimentation.
One primary source of this claim can be traced back to a study in 1967. In this study, researchers noticed that a lab rat seemed to heal more quickly and cleanly under exposure to a red laser. Since 1967, many studies have shown the potential benefits of Infrared Therapy.
There are some avenues where Infrared Therapy treatments appear to be beneficial, though much of this research is preliminary. Studies provide evidence that Infrared Therapy may speed up healing, improve circulation, provide relief from depression, and reduce pain.
While there are some potentially exciting benefits of Infrared Therapy, there is zero evidence that the therapy can boost Testosterone Production. Most doctors believe that Infrared Therapy, at best, provides no benefit to Testosterone and, at worst, may actually impair Testicular Function and further disrupt Hormone Balance.
